The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996 mandated the adoption of standard unique identifiers for health
care providers that are referred to as the National Provider Identifier
(NPI).
The NPI is a unique 10-digit numeric identifier assigned to:
- Health care providers: physicians, dentists and pharmacists;
- Organizational health care providers: hospitals, pharmacies, group medical practices, laboratories, ambulatory
care facilities and nursing homes; and
- Other covered entities under HIPAA, i.e.
managed care organizations such as DC Chartered Health
Plan, Inc.
The NPI will be a permanent identifier assigned for
life. All providers using the NPI will simplify the
administration of the health care system and encourage
the electronic transmission of health care information.
By May 23, 2007 all health care providers who
utilize HIPAA standard electronic transactions must
use the NPI.
A health care provider can apply for the NPI
in one of two ways:
